Flavio's snowboard pictures

Sorry if the pictures are not best quality, but this ain't Transworld either!
See also the mountains page.

If you are a snowboarder: yes, I know I have no style, but I do have a lof of fun nonetheless
If you are not a snowboarder: no, it's not as dangerous as it seems

Big drop

A big drop (sequence) (56 KB)

A sequence of a big drop. Monte Bondone, April 2000

OK, you want to know just how big. The exit is almost flat so I'm assuming I had no initial vertical speed. The advertised speed of the camera's motor is 4.4 frames/second, so the total vertical drop is 12.5 metres:

7 frames of air / 4.4 frames per second = ~1.6 seconds of air

  ½ × (1.6s)2 × 9.81m/s2 = ~12.5m

Sequence courtesy of my brother Giorgio (does anyone need the services of a snowboarding photographer?)

A short commentary I had dreamed of this jump for years. Then one day the conditions seem to allow it, so I think to myself "What the hell" and throw a nice jump with stylish grab. My brother was nearby, doing some photo shots with the rest of the gang, so I call him for the photo and guess what? I'm so excited that I jump out of balance, I'm rolling my arms to avoid disaster and can't even grab that damn board. I guess I will have to do it again. What a pity. (See below for more barbling about not getting shot at the right time.)

Not-so-blue sky

Val Senales evening (78 KB)

Waiting for the Val Senales cable car after a nice day. November 7, 1998

Yes, the sky was really that color.

New snow on an ancient glacier

Turn at Stelvio Pass (92 KB)

Turning on a perfect slope after a two feet dump at Stelvio Pass. September 13, 1998

(I know the picture is a bit fuzzy, but I tought it could actually look like one of those neat effects you see in the ads. Oh, and just in case you are in doubt, it's not a race board - I like it soft.)

The road gap

The road gap - the second dream of every snowboarder (the first is powder, of course).

Road gap 1 (70 KB)

Left: Looks like I was grabbing my ass this time. That's not something I usually do in public. I never get photographed when I do a stylish maneuver -- only stupid ones. That's probably because I'm not that good at doing stylish maneuvers.

Right: All I know for sure is that I managed to get to the other side. Don't remember if I was spinning or if I was just about to be sorry, but the picture is nice anyway.

Road gap 2 (100 KB)

Dropping a cliff at Marilleva during the Big Easter Dump in 1998.

Cliff drop (colors are a bit ugly -- if you can't see me, I'm right in the middle of the picture)

Tailgrab over the Brenta dolomites

Tailgrab over the Brenta dolomites (56 KB)

The style of this tailgrab is not any good, so enjoy the landscape.

(This is the view of the Brenta dolomites from the south-west face of Monte Bondone.)
