I finally managed to borrow my brother's 9600 XT card and I'm now
happily running on the DVI port. So it appears that the fglrx driver
does not support the DVI port on my older 8500 LE.
I know that there are two different type of DVI port: one digital-only
and another one that can be used with an adaptor to connect a vga cable
for a crt monitor.
This is an interesting point: indeed, the 9600's connector is DVI-I (the
'I' stands for "integrated", I believe -- anyway, it means both digital
and analog) while the 8500LE's is DVI-D -- digital only -- and it was
advertised as such.
However, there's no doubt my LCD panel's DVI input is digital as it was
working correctly with the 8500LE under Windows.
With the 9600 I see this in XFree86.0.log:
(II) fglrx(0): Primary head:
Monitor -- TMDS
Connector -- DVI-I
DAC Type -- TVDAC/ExtDAC
TMDS Type -- Internal
DDC Type -- DVI_DDC
(II) fglrx(0): Secondary head:
Monitor -- NONE
Connector -- VGA
DAC Type -- Primary
TMDS Type -- NONE
DDC Type -- VGA_DDC
With the 8500LE, the primary head would say "Connector -- NONE" no
matter what. I can assure you the DVI connector was soldered to the
board as expected ;) so I guess the driver is misbehaving.
