multi-head with different resolutions & other issues

Hello all,
this post got rather long so I've included a little summary:
[thanks,dual-head?,mergedfb?,layouts,dri,DVI output on 8500LE]
Many thanks to Flavio for setting up this mailing list, and providing
the packages. I've been using the ati proprietary driver off and on for
two years now, having had a similar experience to Flavio's, and only
came across the packages and this list when upgrading to 2.6.7 broke
the ati installer.
I've got some questions I hope someone here can answer:
Is it possible to set up multi-head "xinerama" dri-enabled fglrx with
different resolutions on different monitors? I have tried to do this by
setting up two Device and Screen sections, but this doesn't work as
exected (X refuses to start). You see, one of my monitors has a
terrible refresh rate at certain resolutions.
Also, I have tried to set up something called "MergedFB", which is
apparently an option in the open driver that allows for pseudo-xinerama
with DRI, but I have not managed to get this working properly. AFAIAC
the big issue with xinerama is that one cannot use dri.
I have set up my XF85Config-4 file with multiple layouts - the default
layout is a nice dual-head setup, while there is a second layout,
"ati3d", for playing quake and the like with the fglrx driver.
Even if you are not interested in looking into my problems with it, you
might find it a nice base for setting up a multi-layout config file.
Find it at:

On a related note, I'm running debian sid - what's the preferred way of
obtaining & installing the latest radeon dri module and gl libraries?
Flavio, I'm running an "Evil Master" (or Powered by ATI) Radeon 8500LE
128MB DDR with a dual-head setup on one Samsung SyncMaster 171s LCD
screen and one Viewsonic crap-ass CRT. The LCD screen is not DVI, but I
am using a DVI->CRT converter, and everything is working fine.
Cheers,
Kacper
