Thanks, been here before but lost the link.
[...] I prefer open source when possible.
Me too, but I prefer working drivers even more. ;)
Last time I tried, the open source driver were very lacking. I don't
spend that much time playing games (and the ones I like aren't
available for Linux anyway) but it feel better when you know your
OpenGL is working well.
I agree, but the opensource driver has some other advantages, as it
allows me to run xinerama with different resolutions, watch videos
nicely with the Xv extension, and I avoid having to recompile external
kernel modules whenever I recompile the kernel just to get the card
working. There are tradeoffs to be made with both drivers, the way
things are currently.
Does the dvi output work with the open source drivers?
I tried a few days ago but X wouldn't display anything on either
output. I suspect the removal of proprietary firmware from the latest
Debian XFree86 source breaks the Radeon driver. I wasn't in the mood
of doing more tests that day, but it's on my to-do list.
You don't need the firmware to get the above mentioned functionality.
Haven't had a working oss dri driver in ages, though.

"ATI Linux driver feedback" thing.
I tried. When I click "submit", I get a SQL error from the server. :-

I should try again, maybe they fixed that...
Yes, it sucks, doesn't it? When I tried (with Mozilla and IE) I got a
"Please select product" error message- even though the 8500 was
selected. So I just selected the 9500, and it worked. You'll have a
harder time doing this when you are actually reporting an error
specific to 8500, though. Makes you wonder whether they take the 8500
error reports and stuff them into /dev/null, like they used to.
Cheers,
Kacper
