Debian Sid, stock kernel 2.4.27, latest fglrx .. X starts but no image comes up?

Hello everyone..

I just installed a brand new Debian Sid system with a Radeon 9800 XT, and I can't get the latest ATI drivers running. I have the DRI drivers running fine ( "radeon" driver ), but I'm hitting a wall with the "fglrx" one.

I use the stock 2.4.27 kernel ( flavor -1-686 ), I didn't recompile it, just extracted the source and used the make-kpkg magic to configure it, as well as using make-kpkg to build the fglrx packages .. this is all working fine and smooth with no errors. I configure XFree86Config correctly, and I try to start that X server .. everything seems to go fine, except I get no picture. There is a monitor signal, but it's a black screen. I can Alt+Ctrl+F1 back to a text console, but I can still ssh in. The system is responding, except that X is spinning at 99.9% cpu, and stuck at a black screen.

I tried running with the internal AGPGART but that doesn't make a difference. I made sure the same gcc was used for kernel image and driver also ( gcc 3.3.4 ). Attaching various logs that I suppose can be useful..
