Radeon 9600 + 3.14 hang (black screen)

Hi,

I am having problems with a Radeon 9600 and just ran out of ideas. My
current hope is that maybe someone around here has an idea.

First a few details about my configuration.

Distribution branch:	'SID'
GCC version: 3.3.5
Kernel versions tried:	2.4.27, 2.6.6, 2.6.7, 2.6.8 (debian kernels, binaries & self-compiled)
XFree86 version:	4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
Driver package version:	3.14.1-2
Processor: Athlon XP 1700+ (1466MHz)
RAM: 512MB SDRAM
Mainboard chipset:	SiS 735
Graphics board: 'PowerColor Radeon 9600XT', 256MB

And here is what happens: whenever I activate DRI, X hangs on startup. It
does not crash or anything, it just hangs there (after trashing my virtual
consoles, of course). C-A-D still works, but that is all. I _can_ log into
the machine from my router, however. So everything else still works, apart
from X.

When I deactivate DRI, it works, so I do not think it is a problem with
the monitor configuration. It works with the radeon driver, too, and with
Windows using the generic ATI drivers, so I guess the card is ok. The
device probably is dual-head capable (DVI & VGA connectors), but I do not
want to use it that way at the moment.

The X server log file stops at the point where it _should_ initialize AGP,
if I am not mistaken. So I thought it might be a general problem with the
SiS 735, but

http://www.rage3d.com/content/articles/atilinuxhowto/

lists the chipset as supported, both using internal and external AGP
drivers. The system used to work with an old GeForce2 Ti (and NVidia
binary drivers), too. I removed the NVidia packages, however
(nvidia-kernel-src and nvidia-kernel-common are still installed, but I do
not consider them a problem).

Every description I found of the effect (black screen & hang) referred to
older versions of the ATI drivers (and should be fixed by now at least
according to a quick look at the sources), so no luck there.

I am quite puzzled here. Anybody got an idea? A sample XFree86.0.log and
my current XF86Config-4 are attached.

Regards,
Robert
