Hi,

could you please provide an output of /var/log/XFree86.0.log (after a
failed start attempt) and the corresponding [device] section of you
/etc/X11/XF86Config? Otherwise it will be very had to determine what is
wrong.

To get a correct log file, you should disable {x,g,k}dm by issueing i.e.
/etc/init.d/kdm stop and then just running 'X'. Afterwards, copy the
logfile from /var/log.
