maybe i misunderstand this beacause i get again the error with fgl_gear, 
i recompile the kernel whit the vesa fb instead of the radeon fb, was

i think the problem was this, following your guide i didn't understand 
that i must get rid the xfree driver, this is a my fault :P

when i restart x with the ati driver i get again the problem, the 
resolution was correct (17'' with 1280x1024) i took a look at 
XF86Config-4 and i saw that there was a modline at 1280x1024 at 75Hz but 
the manual of my monitor say that the best resolution is 1280x1024 at 60Hz, 
so i comment that line, after i restart X again i got a good graphics 
after some "auto" and recenterd manually the screen, i just hope that i 
don't need to do this every time :P
