Big Desktop and Default Resolutions

Hello! I found the setup guide very helpful, thanks for that.
I am trying to set up Big Desktop mode on a Radeon 8500 with two 19"
monitors of different makes. I have had no problem in getting it to work at
800x600 with 3D acceleration. However, as soon as I bring it any higher
(Shooting for 1280x1024, which I use in XP on the same hardware), the Gnome
desktop only appears on one display, and the second display appears default
X gray and the mouse cursor is limited to moving on the first screen.

What appears to be happening is that the screens are being auto-set to
different resolutions, and my best guess is that it's reading the
hsync/vsync and deciding that one screen is capable of more than the other.
I know that Big Desktop doesn't work with two different resolutions, but I
don't know how to fix it; I've tried every single combination of Sync ranges
in fglrxconfig (the monitors can both handle the highest setting), but X
always seems to try picking two different resolutions. Am I correct in
thinking that passing "IgnoreEDID" "on" and setting identical modelines for
each Display should force them into using a specific sync rate and
resolution?

Instead of posting my huge XFree86.0.log, I've posted it to
http://virt.vgmix.com/XFree86.0.log if you want to have a look. It's
probably a mess, and there are probably other things I need to fix after
I've got this resolution thing taken care of. Thanks in advance for any
suggestions.
