Maybe that's the case ? When I would do # CONFIG_FB is not set or # 
CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set , would I be ok with vga=791 ?

The only kernel configuration option that I can think of that could
cause problems would be CONFIG_FB_RADEON* . I'm afraid at this point we
can only hope that the upcoming 8.10 release will work for you.
