Toggling the VSync option in NWN (and restarting NWN) does not make a difference. I'm not sure how to force the OpenGL magic you refer to in your first hint. Is there a way to do this for closed-source applications (LD_PRELOAD tricks etc)? Also, at least for NWN, the nwmouse hack[1] (which converts the NWN software cursor into a hardware curso) makes the problem go away (I've had NWN hang on me in my first test session, but that turned out to be non-reproducible).
