Thanks a lot for this information. Thus, it seems to be normal that 3D uses as much CPU as it can get. I am unfamiliar with 3D (never really used it) and thought that hardware acceleration prevents from using too much CPU. But it seems to be different.

As I stated in my update, the error could be located in the statement on the gentoo-radeon faq (link on the website):

*_Question 4.11_*: /My glxgears score is very low (<120), but everything seems to be working. Why?/ You've probably enabled vertical sync while running fglrxconfig. This limits your framerate to the vertical refresh rate of your monitor, which is obviously going to affect glxgears more than anything else. To turn v-sync off, open /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (or /etc/X11/xorg.conf) in an editor, and look for the "Capabilities" setting in the "Device" section. This is a hex value, and the 3rd digit from the right controls v-sync. To turn it *on*, set the third digit from the right to "8", like this: "0x00000800". To turn it *off*, just set it back to "0" - "0x00000000".

-> maybe this is an beneficial information to add to the website, because it is so easy to ignore it.

Thanks to everyone, this problem seems to be solved.

BUT --- Another one directly followed: suspend to ram does not work anymore, X freezes. I found various skriptes on the net, but nothing worked. Before fglrx , it worked out of the box - does anybody has a workaround with the ati drivers that works on a t42 ?

thanks

greetings,
