X server does not allow to switch between resolutions

Hi,

I got my high resolution 1400x1050 working on my Thinkpad 41p
(thanks to Alex who sent me the necessary patches).

However, it appears that I cannot change the resolution while
the server is running. My attempt with the Gnome applet for
the monitor resolution failed (the server does not support
it, it claimed). Likewise, I cannot change it with Ctr-Alt-+/-.

I am using my laptop for presentations. Beamers support
usually only 1024x768.

What can I do in that case?
