today i upgraded my notebook (ati mobility radeon x600, 64mb memory) from
512mb to 1024mb ram. fglrx works fine with 512mb but with 1024mb xfree86
doesn't come up. the display just turns black and the cpu usage rises up to
99% (used by xfree86).
i recompiled my kernel (2.6.11.5) with highmem support (4gb) and also the
fglrx driver.
I assume you've double checked that the fglrx kernel module was
recompiled, reinstalled and reloaded correctly.
cat /proc/mtrr says:
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x3ff00000 (1023MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1
Hmm, overlapping MTRRs. Is this also the case with 512 MB?
any idea what makes the difference for fglrx between 512mb and 1024mb ram?
I'm not sure, as it's working fine here on several machines with 1 GB of
RAM or even more, but my guess would be it's most likely related to
highmem. What do you get if you grep for HIGHMEM in the kernel
configuration file?
