Hi when I try to use the script to download the drivers and packages,

The ATI driver is for X.Org version 6.8.0, but it also works fine on
6.8.1 and 6.8.2; I know this and my scripts automatically download the
driver for 6.8.0 when they find X.Org 6.8.1, but 6.8.2 didn't exist
until recently and my scripts didn't support it.
To fix this, follow Mathieu's suggestion or download the source package
again from my site. I just uploaded packages that fix because I, too,
switched to Ubuntu's X.Org 6.8.2 yesterday.
Note that I forgot to update the changelog even though I made this minor
change and another very minor change to the control panel's makefile.
Also this guide seems heavily focused on what to do if you are using an
official kernel image from debian - but I never or have only rarely ever
used these. There seems to be no clear expanation of what to do, if like
me you prefer to get your kernels from kernel.org.
Exactly the same, as long as you build your kernels with make-kpkg.
Otherwise, I suggest you use module-assistant to build the fglrx
module's package. That's what I'm doing currently.
I tried using the binary drivers but they complained they wanted an old
beta version of xfree.86 (4.3.95 or something similar) [...]
What do you mean "an old beta version of xfree"? Where did you get those
binary packages? I never used a beta version of XFree86, so I'm 100%
sure I never built fglrx packages against such a beast.
By the way, as mentioned above I recently switched to X.Org so I also
uploaded binary packages for X.Org.
