X hanging on logout to GDM...

This is on kernel 2.6.11.7 and 2.6.11.9 -

The fglrx package is built using Flavio's build method, with particular
attention paid to kernel recommendations.  The agp chipset is (or
appears to be) intel.

Motherboard is Compaq Presario Series 5700 desktop (I know...)

Card is 9700 pro.

Problem:

Logout from Gnome to GDM results in  xsystem hang on subsequent login,
or more immediately when language environment changed in GDM.  BIG
problem for multilingual workstation.

Perhaps another module/kernel combination? or is it an x configuration
thing?  Any help appreciated.
