The fglrx package is built using Flavio's build method, with particular

Motherboard is Compaq Presario Series 5700 desktop (I know...)
Card is 9700 pro.
Problem:
Logout from Gnome to GDM results in xsystem hang on subsequent login,
or more immediately when language environment changed in GDM. BIG
problem for multilingual workstation.
I had lots of problems like this with a 9600, which is similar I believe.
I have now updated to X.Org 6.8.2, and the problems have disappeared.
You can easily get X.Org from ubuntu. Just add the archive and
installer xserver-xorg. It has a long chain of dependencies, but it
should all resolve rather nicely.
