Xfree hangs with fglrx on Radeon 9250, AMD64 and kernel 2.6.11

Hi All.
I'm trying to get my brand new amd64 and Radeon 9250 up and flying and
I've been running into some problems regarding X. I've followed the
instructions on the website, but once I start X the screen remains black
and the machine locks-up (using the fglrx driver).

If I'm not mistaken the product sold as 9250 contains the same chip as
9200, but with the second display-port mounted (DVI). I'm running the
"amd64" port of Debian (unstable) and the default installer boots up
using vesa-framebuffer.

The "radeon" driver seems to work most of the time.

I've built the kernel module from the stock Debian 2.6-11-9-amd64-k8
kernel using make-kpkg and gcc-3.4. I also tried the pre-built fglrx
module, but that resulted in the following error:
 fglrx: version magic '2.6.11-9-amd64-k8 gcc-3.3' should be  
 '2.6.11-9-amd64-k8 gcc-3.4'

any ideas?

modprobe produces the following in the dmesg log:
