No, the radeon module is not needed. Don't know about the renderer
string, but as long as the driver works (i.e. it doesn't say "Mesa GLX
indirect") there's no need to care about what it actually prints.
Glxgears prints goes in 1200~1300 FPS, running Gnome with all the bells
and whistles.
