Hi.
I was running 8.14.13 version onto a 2.6.11.12 kernel and a "stock"
Debian sarge, and it worked OK.
My video card, according to lspci, is an

ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]

I upgraded fglrx-driver and fglrx-kernel-src to version 8.16.20,
recompiled the kernel module with make-kpkg and... no X.
No errors in dmesg, the only errors in XFree86.0.log are:

(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitModes failed
(EE) fglrx(0): R200PreInit failed
...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Any hint? Do I have to upgrade to kernel 2.6.12?

PS: se necessario ti posso mandare XF86Config-4, XFree86.0.log e output
vari, in privato o se può essere utile in lista.
