Now I successfully use these settings

HorizSync 30-92
VertRefresh 50-85

resulting from a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 selecting "Medium" as
the method for selecting monitor characteristics and 1280x960 @ 85Hz as
video mode.
I also added some changes as specified on Flavio's page. I uploaded my
complete XF86Config-4 file at

3D acceleration works perfectly.
