well, I've just tested it and as I would have hoped : it works !

so, the conclusion is that once the screen has been messed (DRI wise)
then after it is impossible to get it right without DRI (on 1st or 2nd
session) but then only one "regular" X session is fine (dri/drm  , fglrx
et al.)
