Not Working: fglrx-8.16.20-1 + Debian (testing) + Kernel 2.6.8-386 (custom) + Xorg 6.8.2
- From: Rick Maffei <ralm at bigfoot dot com>
- Date: Sat, 01 Oct 2005 09:31:06 -0400
Hey all,
First of all, please forgive the long message but from what I have read
on the web thus far, the included information is usually what is asked
for in these instances. Second of all...
I'm at my wit's end trying to get my ATI Radeon 9000 AGP card working
with the above configuration. I've followed Flavio's excellent
instructions for installing the fglrx drivers on a Debian system
(http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html)
and I still cannot get the fglrx driver recognized by Xorg. The
/var/log/Xorg.0.log simply states at the end:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
(Complete log included below along with my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.)
This card worked with graphics acceleration before I upgraded to the
Xorg xserver and the 2.6.8 i386 kernel. In addition, the card does work
with my current configuration, but only with the "radeon" module and
thus no acceleration.
I went with the custom 2.6.8 kernel because of a warning on Flavio's
page about compiling the kernel and fglrx module with the same compiler
version. GCC 4.0 is currently installed on my system, but according to
/proc/version the 2.6.8 kernel-image from the Debian testing repository
appears to have been compiled with GCC 3.X. However, I could not get a
2.6.8 kernel compiled with GCC 4.0 (a long story with plenty of gruesome
details by others on the internet). dpkg showed that GCC 3.3 was still
on my system, so using some information gathered from the net, I changed
the /usr/bin/gcc and /usr/bin/cpp links to point to the gcc-3.3 and
cpp-3.3 executables. A compile of the 2.6.8 kernel and fglrx modules
succeeded without any noticable problems. Plus I have been booting into
the custom kernel and all appears normal. I started the kernel
recompile using the config options from my old 2.4.X kernel and verified
that the options listed by Flavio are set as instructed (I set
CONFIG_DRM=y with CONFIG_RADEON=m but all the rest are exactly as
specified).
I can load the fglrx module by hand (modprobe fglrx) and the agpgart and
via-agp modules are loaded during boot. I even modified /etc/modules to
include fglrx so that it is loaded upon boot and verified in
/var/log/messages that it is loaded after the AGP modules. An inspection
of dmesg (also included below) and /var/log/messages showed no obvious
errors. However, fglrx always shows it is not being used (lsmod output
also included below along with lspci), and when I startx, the above "no
devices detected" error appears and the server does not start.
Does anyone have any ideas? Or at least a helmet to lend before I dent
my forehead while beating it against the wall?
