What does "a bunch more of (II) messages about different graphics drivers"
mean? Please post the *complete* log file (as an attachment, if possible).

Anyway, there's no mention of fglrx in your log file, so I strongly suspect
X is not loading the config file you think it's loading. Maybe the
configuration infrastructure is regenerating a default config under your
feet. Please check this before doing any other test.
