I think the problem is this:

X Window System Version 6.8.2 (Debian (non-modularized) 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7 20050908031534 David Nusinow <dnusinow at debian dot org>)

My X.Org prints this:

  X Window System Version 6.8.2 (Debian 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7 20050908031534 \
David Nusinow <dnusinow at debian dot org>)

So your X server is monolithic and is trying all the built-in drivers (MGA,
Cirrus, VMware, etc. etc.), but obviously not the fglrx driver which is an
external module. Perhaps you installed the xserver-xorg-dbg package?

Flavio,

You hit the nail on the head. dpkg showed both the xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-dbg installed on my system. I don't know how since I usually use "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" but it was there. I uninstalled the dbg package and reinstalled the non-dbg one, rebooted, and voila! X booted right up with the fglrx module and accelerated graphics are working.

I am in your debt in solving this problem. And you have done a great job on your "ATI Linux driver packages for Debian" page. It helped me tremendously in originally setting up my Radeon 9000 when using XFree86 and now using the Xorg xserver.
