I had the same problem recently while I was testing a couple of old
Matrox cards. AFAIK, X can be set to a display resolution of 75 or 100
DPI and apparently different drivers have different ideas of the actual
resolution. I don't know if drivers calculate the resolution from the
monitor's DDC data (i.e. pixel size and physical dimensions) or if they
use a fixed default.
You can probably fix it by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers and adding the
-dpi 100 or -dpi 75 option as appropriate. Or you can readjust all your
font sizes and forget about it.
