X.Org FGLRX Brekdown

Hey guys,
I am running Debian testing with an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. I had graphics
working great with 3D acceleration until X got switched to X.org, when
direct rendering stopped working. I tried installing the new packages
generated from the ATI installer and would boot up to a black screen. I
decided to update my kernel to 2.6.13.4 from 2.6.7 (for various
reasons). I then built the driver module and installed flavio's
binaries. Still no 3D acceleration, but graphics worked. Last night I
went through an entire reinstall of the fglrx driver, building my own
packages from the source provided by flavio's site. Still no direct
rendering. I have dug through so many tutorials and FAQ's and can not
diagnose the problem.
