I'm forwarding this to the list, just in case someone else hits the same 
problem. By the way, when you said that you tried to install my packages 
*and* the packages from the ATI installer, I suspected that the problem 
was something like this.

Looking in the X.Org log file, I found that the module version of fglrx
was not matching the driver version.  I am not sure why, but I think I
had accidently installed an incorrect .deb for the driver over the one I
had built from source.

Anyways I reinstalled the driver and source and built a new kernel
module and all is now running well.
