I thought it was an EDID problem,
It's quite possibly indirectly related to that, because if the EDID is
available, the X server will derive the DPI from it
It seems that there is some EDID-related problem with 8.18.6 - see my
earlier post with the two Xorg.log files, which shows that 8.18.6 does
not retrieve correct EDID information from the display. In my case it
selects the wrong resolution (1024x768 instead of 1280x1024) and also
guesses the DPI incorrectly.
I was thinking that version 8.18.6 was detecting the wrong resolution on
my laptop too, but it was only related to DPI settings. While version
8.16.20 of the driver can't read any EDID information, and uses 75 DPI
resolution, newer versions (8.18.6 and 8.18.8) reads some EDID data and
sets 88 DPI resolution, thus using much bigger fonts.
Thanks to Michael Dänzer, I could manually set DPI using
$ startx -- -dpi 75
or using kdm after modifying /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers, adding -dpi 75 to
the end of the :0 line (I don't use any other display).
Hope this helps,
