I have the same Xorg version (debian testing), fglrx 8.19.10 and a 
radeon mobility 9700 and I see the regular cube with fgl_glxgears..
In addition today I've installed on an amd64 box with Ubuntu breezy and 
a radeon 9600 pro and fgl_glxgears works also..
