crash on X.org exit

Hi all,
I have a problem where exiting the X session will hang the computer
with a corrupted screen (white vertical lines). Nothing shows up in the
X.org logs. Quitting the X server by switching virtual consoles and
interrupting or killing the server does not hang the machine.
I only see this problem with the fglrx drivers.
I have debian sid, linux 2.6.14 SMP
fglrx 8.19.10-1
xorg 6.8.2-10
I have X.org set up in a dual-monitor "large framebuffer" Xinerama
configuration as per
Option "DesktopSetup" "horizontal,reverse"
Maybe someone on the list has any ideas as to how to debug this further?
I have a Radeon 9550 video card:
