X crashes on mouse move or key press

Hi:

I'm using an Athlon 64 and Radeon X200.

I loaded the fglrx driver and I get to the gdm logon.  But X crashes as
soon as I move the mouse or press a key.

I get the same problem with debian and ubuntu.  The details are at:

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
