please check, whether runlevel 3 stops X.
you shoukd have a directory /etc/rc3.d/ containing a link KXXkdm, where XX
is a number (say 20, so the name woukd be K20kdm). in /etc/rc2.d/ should
be a link called SXXkdm, where XX is a number. both links should point to
/etc/init.d/kdm.
thus, entering runlevel 2 starts automatically X by calling SXXkdm.
now login to kde.
switch to a console.
enter
# init 3
X (and kdm) should be stopped -- switching to tty7 (ctrl+alt+f7) should
give you a black screen, maybe with a blinking cursor.
back to the previous console type
# init 2
X and kdm should start up again and you should be taken to tty7 where the
kdm-login resides.
/etc/init.d/, /etc/rc2.d/ and /etc/rc3.d/ are debian pathes, but i think
they are part of the lsb and thus exist at least as links on every linux
using sysv-init (which most if not all linuces do).
reboot is in no way necessary.
