you should not even need to unpack the installer!
if you run xorg 6.9, install it fully (even xserver-xorg) and build your
packages with the installer and target Debian/sid, install the generated
packages and run module-assistand a-i fglrx-kernel.
be sure to remove the fglrx-module before.
but atm you may check whether the module loaded and the module in your
modules-directory are the same. maybe your old fglrx-module was not
unloaded and replaced by the new one?
