fglrx 2.6.15 amazing but true!

Thanks to everybody. I had lost all hope and in desperation simply tried
installing the ATI ati-driver-installer-8.22.5-i386.run as is without
doing anything. Of course in now works perfectly. Up to now I've never
been able to get the ATI drivers to work and always used Flavio's
ingredients to build them.
Is this some subtle form of revenge by the ATI people?
Thanks to all for their time.
For the record the installer worked out of the box for 2.6.15-1-686 with
Xorg 6.8.2 ATI Radeon 9550.
