older kernel source or I need to use the 2.6?
i do not know make-kpkg (build my kernel always with make ...).
but i think you only need to install the image with apt-get (or synaptics
or another frontend) and the header-files.
after that you may easily build the deb-packages from the at-installer
(search the archive for instructions), install them and build the
kernel-module with the module-assistant (again, see the archive).
maybe one of the users of make-kpkg or debian-images around here has some
remarks, i don't no whether the prefabricated debian-iamges require
special handling.
