Then the question is, which ATI graphics card do you have? The output of
"lspci -v" and "lspci -n" could be helpful, along with the full output
of "lsmod" and "dmesg" just to make sure that the kernel's radeon DRM
module is not loaded.
I've read that sometimes this problem could be bypassed naming the
device 'radeon' and not 'fglrx'.
What did you read exactly, and where? Of course you mean the driver, not
the device, and which driver? The kernel module or the X display driver?
In both cases, "radeon" and "fglrx" are two entirely different things,
and if you are satisfied to use the radeon driver you could have spared
a lot of time and effort by just using that, rather than going to the
trouble of reinstalling your system just to be able to use fglrx and
then not using it.
I've done that, but X Server fails with this error:

EE: No screen found!
Again, the complete X server log could be helpful, because there's
certainly another, more interesting error before "No screen found!" that
describes in detail the cause of such error.
